A aalk through history – from the town center to the lakefront

We begin at the Evangelical church—one of the most recognizable landmarks in Mikołajki’s skyline. Its slender tower has been a guiding point for those returning from the lake for centuries. Here, we’ll also tell the story of the town—from the times of the Teutonic Knights to the present day.

Next, we follow 3 Maja Street to the town square, where you'll find the fountain and the iconic crowned fish. We’ll explain what this fish symbolizes and how the legend surrounding it came to be.

A walk that reveals more – from the square to the promenade

From the square, we head down Kajki Street. Here, you can still feel the spirit of old Mikołajki—low houses, tiled roofs, ancient staircases along walls, and old fishermen’s sheds. From this street, we descend straight to the modern lakeside promenade.

The promenade runs along the lake all the way to the sailing village. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, snap some photos, and watch the yachts. Here, we’ll share the story of how sailing developed in Masuria, about the tourists who have visited since the 19th century, and how the town has changed over time.

Mikołajki from a different perspective – sailing history, bridges, and legends

As we pass the road bridge and pedestrian walkway, you’ll learn why this exact spot was chosen for successive crossings over the lake. You’ll also hear the legend of the mysterious fish once attached to the bridge. We’ll stop by information boards and viewpoints, where you can see the connections between the lakes—Przeczka, Bełdany, and Śniardwy.

Off the beaten path – The Jewish Cemetery and Old Mikołajki

Finally, we’ll take you to a less obvious yet deeply moving place. The Jewish cemetery in Mikołajki is one of the best-preserved sites of its kind in Masuria. Here, we’ll speak about the townspeople who are no longer with us, and why some of the gravestones stand apart from the actual graves.

We’ll also draw your attention to the details of historic architecture—small houses, decorated doors, windows with cornices, flower gardens, and the characteristic Masurian stairs along the walls. This walk will show you Mikołajki not only as a tourist hub but also as a quaint, old Masurian town.
